The design of barns and other livestock facilities on small-scale farms in Maine depends on the number and types of livestock raised, grain- and feed-storage needs, and production methods used. Planning for a new livestock building, or adapting existing facilities, starts with establishing goals. These may include expanding or starting a new livestock enterprise or improving labor or production efficiency for an existing enterprise.
When designing facilities, allow as much versatility as possible for future changes. A venture that starts out as a hobby can develop into a larger enterprise to offset costs, and eventually lead to profit. Use the following tables to estimate space needs for livestock housing, feed and bedding storage, and support facilities to maintain a small livestock operation in Maine. A general-purpose barn generally houses more than one kind of livestock and feed.
On a small-scale farm, it may be the only building needed to shelter livestock and store crops. But on any size farm, it is important to have an extra, unattached smaller building with the capacity to quarantine animals that are either new to the farm or currently ill.
For example, it is generally estimated that the equivalent feed allowance of one mature cow is five pigs raised up to the size of pounds. During winter months the manure pack may build up as much as 3 to 4 ft. A clear height of 10 ft.
Reduce clear height to 9 ft. The maximum height that baled hay can be piled from a truck bed without excessive labor or elevator is 10 to 12 ft. Varies with the size of the animal. The idea is to let young stock through while keeping the mothers out. To prevent loss of feed quality, storage areas should be clean, dry, and rodent-free with minimum exposure to sunlight. A system of noting when feeds are placed into storage will enable farmers to use oldest feeds first.
Feeding livestock a balanced ration depends upon many factors too numerous to itemize here. For further information on feeding, consult your county University of Maine Cooperative Extension office. Feeder stock are fed less hay and more grain for weight gain.
Length of horse stalls includes 2 ft. Calculate the amount of hay storage needed for 5 sheep for days. Hay will be stacked 8 feet high. This gives the spatial requirements in cubic feet. Divide this figure by the planned storage height in feet. The result is the area required for that particular feed storage in square feet. The square root of this number will give you the floor space needed to accommodate the feed or bedding. Note: Do not plan to store bagged feed more than 5 feet deep.
The amount of manure generated per animal depends on the turnout schedule for the animals and the manure management scheme followed by the producer daily clean-out of soiled bedding versus seasonal clean-out of manure pack as well as the amount of roughage in the diet. If using the manure-pack method of manure management, aeration of the lower layers—via a tractor-mounted rototiller or chisel plow—will allow faster composting of the manure pack.

Livestock raising is an important sector of the Colombian economy, which will face serious challenges in the next decade, including adaptation to and mitigation of climate change. Colombia must change the model of livestock production in a very short time by freeing up areas of pasture for other uses and focusing intensified livestock production in suitable zones. Despite the urgency and the magnitude of the required changes, only isolated small-scale initiatives exist. Colombia therefore has the challenge to scale-up these initiatives 1 , but at present it has no program designed to achieve this objective.

Farm building , any of the structures used in farming operations, which may include buildings to house families and workers, as well as livestock, machinery, and crops. The basic unit of commercial agricultural operation, throughout history and worldwide, is the farm. Because farming systems differ widely, there are important variations in the nature and arrangements of farm facilities. This article deals with farmhouses and service buildings that can be classified as follows: livestock barns and shelters; machinery- and supply-storage buildings; buildings and facilities for crop storage, including fodder; and special-purpose structures. The location of the farmstead and the relative position of its different buildings are influenced by several factors, external and internal. Among the external factors, mainly natural, are soil conditions, climatic conditions, and access facilities to the main road and to the fields. Internal factors depend on the type of business enterprise suitable to the farm.

Despite the urgency and the magnitude of the required changes, only isolated small-scale initiatives exist. Colombia therefore has the challenge to scale-up these initiatives 1 , but at present it has no program designed to achieve this objective. We started by analyzing the policies, actors, and existing initiatives in Colombia. We then sought to understand the potential for and the limitations to scaling-up promising initiatives to face the challenges of climate change in the livestock sector. We identified the key elements from previous initiatives and classified them into the conceptual spaces identified in the theory of scaling-up.
Skip to content. Chickens Pigs Cattle Turkeys Aquaculture. The United States raises and slaughters almost 10 times more birds than any other type of animal. Approximately 9 billion chickens are killed for their meat every year, while another million chickens are used in egg production. All birds—meat chickens, egg-laying hens, turkeys, ducks, geese and others—are excluded from all federal animal protection laws. By sheer number, these are the animals most urgently in need of protection. The ASPCA is working actively with companies that buy or raise chickens to encourage the adoption of higher-welfare practices. Due to the high concentration of birds living atop of their own waste without adequate ventilation, high ammonia levels develop— irritating eyes, throats and skin. Modern chickens look very little like their wild chicken ancestors.

The following points should be considered before planning and designing animal houses. Total manger length in a pen for animals cm. Total water tank length in a pen for animals cm. Floor space requirement covered area m2. Floor space requirement open area m2. Number of calves per pen. For construction of farm buildings selection of site is most important. Before selecting a site the following points are to be considered, Soil Soil must be suitable for strong foundation. Marcy, clay, sandy, rock soils are not suitable.

Our forests are disappearing at an alarming rate and a leading cause is found right on our plates. Upwards of 50, acres of forests are cleared by farmers and loggers per day worldwide, and the equivalent of over 10, football fields are destroyed each day in the Amazon Basin alone. This extreme clearing of land, especially for animal agriculture, results in habitat loss, amplification of greenhouse gases, disruption of water cycles, increased soil erosion, and excessive flooding. A significant amount of total deforestation occurs in rainforests, which are home to over 50 percent of plants and animals on the planet. If we humans continue to burn and bulldoze our rainforests, thousands of species will die each year, we will lose crops like wheat, chocolate, and coffee, and the effects of climate change will worsen. Deforestation is the large-scale clearing of land, generally for agriculture, industry, or transportation. Cattle ranching, animal agriculture, and logging are the leading causes of deforestation in our forests.

Housing young cattle in open yards is still a new technique in most of the developing countries. So before making a detailed study of the building techniques involved in this kind of housing, we really must recall to the reader the principles behind this kind of housing and its advantages over conventional, stanchion housing systems. After a quick look at the various systems recommended, we shall point out the basic recommendations to be observed regarding space standards and the various rounds of work to be respected. The recommendations in this report apply particularly to housing for young cattle, such as feeder bulls and young heifers. But there is no reason why the stockman cannot adapt them, as needed, to other kinds of stock-rearing. Thanks to the experience gained in the Tunisian project, the authors were able to correct and refine a number of construction details. They were also able to identify the most frequently encountered mistakes and problems in this kind of work. This is why certain items have been dealt with in such a detailed way.
Humans depend upon animals for food and related by-products, work and a variety of other uses see table To meet these demands, they have domesticated or held in captivity species of mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and arthropods.

October 11, Creating meat from cells is no longer the realm of science fiction: a Russian cosmonaut did it aboard the International Space Station, and it is just a matter of time before these products arrive in supermarkets. Tests carried out in space in September led to the production of beef, rabbit and fish tissue using a 3D printer. This new technology "could make long-term travel possible and renew space exploration," to Mars for example, said Didier Toubia, the head of the Israeli startup Aleph Farms, which provided cells for the tests.
